Training for Champions

Champions of Champions - Male

Lachlan Carr - 2007 NAS Champion of champions

Lachlan is 19 years old and has been training in GKR karate since he was 10. It was at this young age that he first set his sights on winning at the NAS Nationals, and with his mind so focused on the prize, it seems it was only a matter of time.

Luke Croxford - 2006 NAS Champion of champions

Luke is a martial arts all-rounder, having trained in six styles since he first stepped into an aikido dojo at age seven. In the 21 years since, he has achieved his 2nd Dan in karate whilst also practising kung-fu, hapkido, taekwondo and his own martial art style, Ryu-Ki-Do.

Ben Cunningham - 2005 NAS Champion of champions

Nidan Ben Cunningham’s NAS Titles are not simply testimony to the hard hours of training, they are the fruit of a fervent self-belief and dogged determination. This is Ben, second title he’s won in as many years.

Ben Cunningham - 2004 NAS Champion of champions

Fellow lightweight Ben Cunningham, also 22, was equally impressive in his division, first winning the NAS NSW State Title in point-sparring just weeks after having his appendix removed. In December, he again let fly with his quick hands to win the National Lightweight Title, then to defeat his heavyweight opponent in the Champion of Champions title bout at the NAS Nationals.

Craig Lennox - 2003 NAS Champion of champions

Fellow Go Kan Ryu 2nd Dan, Sydney’s 28-year-old Craig Lennox, won his first Champion of Champions title by using cunning and speed to beat a larger and experienced opponent in 2001 winner Glenn Hutchison, also from GKR.

Vedran Lovric - 2002 NAS Champion of champions

Vedran Lovric is heralded as the 2002 National All Styles (NAS) Champions of Champions. His achievement sets him amongst the elite martial artists of Australia, in what is truly an all style event. Blitz caught up with the Champion for an exclusive insight into what it takes to win such a prestigeous event.

Glenn Hutchison
- 2001 NAS Champion of champions

Nas champion Glenn Hutchison proved his mettle against the best Australia had to offer at the NAS National Championship. Glenn broke through for his first title after seven years of competition.

Des Murphy - 2000 NAS Champion of champions
Des Murphy stepped into his first dojo less than a decade ago. Within this time he has become a dominant karate fighter, the NAS 2000 champion and opened up his own successful school.

Champions of Champions - Female

Samantha Plamer - 2007 NAS Champion of champions

Samantha Palmer may sound like a new name, but her maiden name of Goulter will be recognised from NAS tournaments over the past six years. She is now recorded as being the first Victorian GKR karateka to win the NAS Champion of Champions title.

Samantha Short - 2006 NAS Champion of champions

Samantha entered the 2006 NAS Championships only days before the tournament. She had been suffering from a strained hamstring and had been undecided about her fitness. A greater obstacle, however, and something that would make her victory all the more meaningful, was the recent passing of her sensei, Alan Murdoch, of Shukokai Karate.

Karen Stone - 2005 NAS Champion of champions

Shodan Karen Stone’s NAS Title are not simply testimony to the hard hours of training, they are the fruit of a fervent self-belief and dogged determination. This is Karen's first title belt.

Pania Casey- 2004 NAS Champion of champions

Pint-sized Pania Casey has a roundhouse-kick that will give you whiplash, and pair of hands that proved too fast for all her opponents in the National All Styles Point-sparring division in 2004. The 22-year old mother of two didn’t let the rigours of motherhood stand in her way either, stopping to breast-feed her second baby between matches on her way to winning the Champion of Champions title.

Angela Uytingco - 2003 NAS Champion of champions

Angela Uytingco, 24-year-old Go Kan Ryu karate dynamo, captured back-to-back Champion of Champions titles at the NAS National Championships in December. With a display of tactical brilliance over club mate Claudine Chicheportiche, the 2nd Dan Sydneysider again proved that she is a sport-karate force to be reckoned with.

Angela Uytingco - 2002 NAS Champion of champions

Angela Uytingco is heralded as the 2002 National All Styles (NAS) Champions of Champions. Her achievement sets her amongst the elite martial artists of Australia, in what is truly an all style event. Blitz caught up with the Champion for an exclusive insight into what it takes to win such a prestigeous event.

Erin Forrest - 2001 NAS Champion of champions

Nas champion Erin Forrest proved her mettle against the best Australia had to offer at the NAS National Championship. In a majestic and gritty performance Erin won yet another consecutive title.

Erin Forrest - 2000 NAS Champion of champions

Utopia for Erin Forrest is in the karate ring. After winning her fourth NAS national championship, this teenager is ready to take on the karate world.
